WordsA card against a deposit

Secured card

A credit card issued against a fixed deposit you hold with the bank. The bank marks a lien on the deposit and gives you a limit that’s a share of it; each bank sets the share, and HDFC Bank’s FAQ, for example, says 90 per cent.

HDFC Bank asks for no income documents or credit score for it, though it still checks your bureau record, and the deposit stays locked until you clear your dues and close the card. Its MITC charges interest on these cards at the same rate as the card they’re issued as.
