RuPay on UPI

RBI announced in June 2022 that credit cards could be linked to UPI, starting with RuPay cards, and banks’ own pages still say only RuPay ones can be: Axis Bank’s, for example, says its Visa and Mastercard cards can’t. A linked card pays with your UPI PIN, out of your credit limit.

It pays merchants only, not people or other cards, and some kinds of merchant are blocked too: Axis Bank’s list includes cash withdrawals, lending platforms, IPOs, mutual funds and the category marked P2PM. Axis Bank charges nothing to link a card or to pay this way, and the daily limits are UPI’s own.
