WordsIncome tax return

ITR

Short for income tax return: the form in which you report your income, and the tax on it, to the Income Tax Department each year. You file it on the department’s e-filing portal, and then have 30 days to verify it, which can be done online.

Banks list it among the documents that prove income, beside salary slips and Form 16; HDFC Bank’s page for its IndianOil card, for example, does. Axis Bank’s form for a higher limit asks for the last two years’ ITRs with the computation of total income, or recent salary slips.
